Dressed in an elegant Hanbok—a traditional Korean dress—the lady was graceful in her demonstration. Fascinated by how she purposely worked from behind the arrangement so that it was fully captured in frame, I was then just shy of ten years old, and this left a lasting impression on me. That lady was Im Wha Kong, who has dedicated her life of sixty years to Korean traditional flower arrangement, Cocoji, and its introduction to the world. In a twist of fate, more than 30 years later, from that moment I was accepted as her latest pupil. I have always had great respect for her love for nature, and her incredible, humbling love for Korean Cocoji. However only after her passing in 2018, at the age of 96, did it grow to become a deeper and renewed admiration. As I studied her work and examined old material, I saw her endless creative agonizing and the solitude of her study. Discussions about flowers that I could no longer share with her made me miss her even more. So I have decided to do what I must. What she wanted to tell through flowers, I have decided to continue as best as I can to future students of Korean Cocoji and fellow flower appreciators of the world. Her flowers are a message of love, warmth, and humility, and it needs to be heard. Through this collection, I hope that you encounter the story of flowers of Korea, where love flows from the beauty that arises when trees and flowers take their proper spaces. The ways in which these distinctive cultures enjoy the beauty of flowers have also evolved. As a florist studying Western flower arrangements, I asked myself the question: “Who am I?” This question drew me into the world of Eastern flower arrangement. Flower arrangement in Korea is reflective of our people’s nature and taste for the arts. It’s an important element of our unique culture that expresses our beauty and who we are. There was a time in history when flower arrangement once boomed as a common hobby of Korean women. However, it is regrettable that today, Korean flower arrangements are often only performed by professional groups. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who contributed their time and effort in teaching myself and others the art of Korean flower arrangement, including “the pioneer” Im Wha Kong, and Deokwon Lee, who is training her students without missing the passions and efforts of Im Wha Kong. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to publish this book with Deokwon Lee.
