As of 1 July, our three Sangiovese crus are on the market, three feathers in our production caps. Colle- dilà appeared with the 2007 vintage, while Roncicone and CeniPrimo appeared in 2015 to complete this excellent trio. The 2017 vintage of the three Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines is our third collective effort, and it has definitely been a challenge. The weather in 2017 was so complex as to be unique in our memories: a mild winter, a freeze in April, then drought and torrid heat for more than two months in summer. This inflamed the earth and grape- vines until the providential rains arrived at the end of August through the first ten days of September. But despite all this, as Francesco Ricasoli affirms, what one now tastes upon opening the three exquisite 2017 wines “is the most successful embodiment of the philosophy underpinning our cru project: to create three excellent wines from pure Sangiovese with a precise stylistic continuity”. What we now find in our glass are three great personalities, the results of the unique qualities of the three magnificent vineyards from which these wines originate, combined with our precision viticulture. Colledilà is elegant and complex, Roncicone floral and spicy, CeniPrimo structured and with unmista- kable balsamic hints. A challenge won, therefore, and that’s not a surprise. Because it all began in 2008 in collaboration with the CRA (Council for Agricultural Research), from a rigorously planned research project to map all the complexity of the Brolio territory. Three intense years of research to identify the five best types of soil among the 19 types on the property, analyze the microclimates, altitudes and clones. This research benefitted our entire range of products as well as bringing this extraordinary triad of wines to life. “We can’t hold L’Eroica without hugging each other.” This is how Giancarlo Brocci – creator of the well-known cycling event that made Gaiole in Chianti famous all over the world – motivated the cancellation of the race scheduled for 3-4 October. L’Eroica is in fact the event that perhaps more than any other has entered the hearts of fans and created strong and lasting friendships in the name of a great sport practiced according to the timeless “heroic” values of fatigue, passion, and respect for both the opponent and the territory where one rides. “Ricasoli is doubly connected to this event. Not only is it one of the historic sponsors of L’Eroica, but Brolio is also one of the symbolic places of the race” says Francesco Ricasoli. The evocative departure of cyclists, guided by torches on the path leading to Brolio Castle, takes place every year at dawn. And here there is the Agribar, “Eroica Caffè”, like the race itself inspired by the golden years of cycling in Italy. Now it’s a reference point for all passing cyclists, who can stop for a coffee or a cool drink, for a visit to the small company museum of vintage bikes and – as of this year – also stay overnight in the comfortable Agrirooms. Waiting, like us, for the great gathering of L’Eroica 2021. “L’Eroica,” says Brocci, “is by now a real cultural movement, a way of life, which has certainties that go beyond the annual event. Starting from its permanent route on the white dirt roads of the province of Siena, which today are universally recognized for their historical value.” It all began with an article written in 1993 in which he care- fully explained the need to preserve this part of the land around Siena, a natural bike paradise, with its white dirt roads which were in danger of disappearing in the name of progress. In 1997 the first edition of the race with vintage bikes and equipment was held. Since then thousands of enthusiasts have gathered in Gaiole in Chianti (over 8,200 for the 2019 race), and since 2014 similar events have been held all over the world. Some time ago Francesco Ricasoli found a letter in the archive of the Castle library written in German, sent in April 1946 to his grandfather, Baron Luigi Ricasoli. Sender: a former officer of the Göring Division. Intrigued, he had it translated and thus discovered an extraordinary story of heroism that took place at Brolio Castle during the Second World War. Here’s an extract of that letter: “Highly Esteemed Baron, …. I had orders from my division to carry out preparations to blow up the towers of your beautiful castle. But looking at it, I realized the absurdity of destroying that magnificent building, so I deliberately delayed, hoping for salvation, the arrival of the front. Then a second time the command came to bombard the castle, which in the meantime had been taken by the Allies, because our Commander suspected the presence of enemy lookouts on its towers. This was an extremely dramatic moment for me: it seemed that this time the castle truly had to be destroyed, something that I had already avoided once! I didn’t execute that order. I directed the shelling to the right and left of the castle, and then I told my com- mander that there was no more artillery. He had my claims crosschecked, and because they were found to be false, I was arrested and taken to Florence before a military court, sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and taken to Germany where I was freed only on 7 April 1945.” The Castle suffered severe damage as a result of German shelling and British and South African bombing in the first two weeks of July 1944, but it was not destroyed. And now we know that it is also thanks to the courage and sacrifice of that young officer that the Castle has arrivec to the present day in all its beauty and in all its meaning for the history of our territory and Italy.
