2018-19URBAN SCHOOL OF SAN FRANCISCOannualreportUrban School of San Francisco seeks to ignite a passion for learning, inspiring its students to become self-motivated, enthusiastic participants in their education — both in high school and beyond.MISSION STATEMENTANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 | 3The other day I ran into a woman whose name appears several times in this annual donor report. I took the opportunity to thank her for her generous support of the school, and she replied simply, “Nothing matters more to me than my kids, and nothing has meant more to my kids than Urban.” It was a nice reminder of something we can never underestimate: this school matters. And so, then, do annual donors like you. You help bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the cost of an Urban education; you allow us to offer the myriad opportunities that meet and inspire student interest; you underwrite our faculty salaries and financial aid essential to so many families. Quite simply, your annual support is the oxygen required for Urban to thrive. Contributors to the Mark Salkind Scholarship Fund are also recognized in these pages, and rightly so. Nothing could honor and sustain Mark’s legacy more than an endowment gift to support the school’s commitment to access and equity. So thank you for your generous investment in Urban, now and for the future. If I can ever be of service, please feel free to contact me.Best regards, millerdanMESSAGE FROMHEAD OF SCHOOL4 | ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19Eve Niquette CHAIRAnn Fischer Hecht VICE CHAIRRegan Pritzker VICE CHAIRMark Wehrly VICE CHAIRShannon Cogen SECRETARYBob Rosner TREASURER2018-19 BOARD OF TRUSTEESLucia Choi-DaltonEd CollotonDrusie DavisChristina Fox (‘87)Jim HansenLisa Hartwig PARENT/GUARDIAN ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVEJohn HayashiLizzy Hayashi (‘20) STUDENT REPRESENTATIVELeo Hidy (‘19) STUDENT REPRESENTATIVERobert HohmanMary Lee FACULTY REPRESENTATIVESerina LopezSusan MastoAndrew Nguyen (‘99) ALUMNI COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVEMeagan NyeMisha Olivas (‘94)Warrington ParkerChris Ridley (‘91)Gretchen SandlerCarla SilverSkyler Silverman FACULTY REPRESENTATIVEScott Sklar Claire SolotDan SpringerDeann WrightANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 | 5Urban has been sustained throughout our 53-year history by those who believe in the school’s mission. Broad support each year from all parts of our community enables Urban to invest in the academic, athletic, arts and co-curricular programs that prepare our students to be confident thinkers and compassionate leaders. Our thanks go out to the extraordinary volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to the school. In addition to all of our dedicated Trustees, we would like to thank Parent/Guardian Association Co-Presidents Lisa Hartwig and Kari Levine, Capital Campaign Chair Regan Pritzker and Alumni Council President Andrew Nguyen (‘99). Special thanks are also extended to Auction Chair Kate Hanson and Annual Fund Co-Chairs Wendy Miller and David Sunding, whose leadership helped raise $1.6 million from our auction and Annual Fund Campaign combined. niquetteeveMESSAGE FROMCHAIR, URBAN BOARD OF TRUSTEESI am humbled by the widespread giving during the 2018-19 school year. Parents, grandparents, alumni, former trustees, alumni parents and friends of the school gave generously to each of Urban’s fundraising efforts and we could not be more grateful. I extend my warmest thanks to those near and far who gave to the Mark Salkind Scholarship Fund. An outpouring of more than 300 gifts were received, which raised the value of this fund to over $1 million. Your visionary contributions to this fund allow Urban to provide additional financial aid to ensure a diverse student body that represents all backgrounds of our thriving city and the Bay Area.On behalf of Urban’s Board of Trustees, I thank you for your unwavering support of Urban. We look forward to partnering with you in the years ahead.6 | ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19As members of the Urban Parent/Guardians Association (PGA), we are a diverse group with a single shared trait: a desire to have our students receive an Urban education. Initially, I thought our connection was simply a matter of geography. But it turns out this seemingly straightforward connection has wide-ranging impacts because of the values upon which it is based. We are a community bound together by Urban’s values, strengthened by the commitment of our members, and committed to reflecting the brilliance of the remarkable teachers, administrators and staff at Urban.hartwiglisaMESSAGE FROM2017-19 CO-PRESIDENT, PARENT/GUARDIAN ASSOCIATION Thank you to all of the passionate and committed parents who have donated their time, ideas and financial resources to this extraordinary community.
