Urban Blues Athletics 2020-21Urban’s Athletic Department seeks to provide experiences where students develop a passion for their sport. The interscholastic athletic program is designed to promote and affirm the ideals of respect, discipline, integrity, commitment, physical fitness, sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork, while engaging students fully in mind and body. Last school year, nearly 70% of students body participated in interscholastic athletics—a testament to the importance of athletics as part of Urban’s overall educational program. Students are given the opportunity to participate in competitive athletics at the varsity, junior varsity or frosh- Welcome to Urban Athletics sophomore levels, depending on the individual’s ability and experience. JV and frosh-level teams focus on fundamental skill instruction and teamwork, while varsity teams stress competition and advanced skills. Participation on any team requires a strong commitment and the ability to place team goals ahead of personal ones. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to participate on a team to enhance personal growth, self- discipline and to promote positive teamwork across all grade levels and abilities. We teach students the fundamentals of every sport to provide them with the courage to compete and the intellect to win. Urban offers a place for both competitive athletes, as well as students interested in trying a new sport. Urban’s athletic program focuses on improving students’ skills—both individually and through the synergy of teamwork (and we enjoy winning, too!). We field numerous competitive teams, many of whose achievements are honored in the rows of championship pennants on our Blues House wall. The 2020-21 athletics seasons have been reconfigured by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) due to state health restrictions. To honor their diversity of interests and abilities, students can meet requirements by taking Urban classes or through participation in approved activities outside of school. Some of the classes we offer include: Yoga Rock Climbing Dance Strength and Conditioning Urban Hiking High Intensity Interval Training *For 2020-21, physical activity requirements will be adjusted to comply with mandated health and safety rules.
