Yet each innovation is grounded in a mission that has guided Urban for more than 50 years: to “ignite a passion for learning” that will last a lifetime. In 2017-18, Urban quickly settled into our expanded campus, with The Mark Salkind Center now a thriving hub of student life. For the first time, Urban hosted the North Coast Section (NCS) basketball tournament in our new gym, drawing a crowd of current and former students thrilled to cheer on their fellow Blues. The seven additional classrooms have also allowed our rich and extensive curriculum to grow, as we seek to create a culture of intellectual engagement that students carry with them long after they leave Urban. In December 2017, Urban’s Board of Trustees approved our new strategic plan, Urban Thrives 2023 (urbanthrives.urbanschool.org). The culmination of many months of research, analysis and discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing Urban, this plan serves as a roadmap for the school’s priorities and growth during the next five years. Accomplishing the goals outlined in Urban Thrives 2023 will strengthen the institution and community while extending our reach as educational leaders and innovators. With so much to celebrate on the horizon, Urban also paused to say farewell to three long-serving Urban teachers whose impact spans generations of students and our school’s 51-year history. In the theater department, Frances Evens and Wendy Parkman retired after decades of educating and mentoring Urban actors, directors, writers, performers and technicians, preparing them to deal with all of life’s challenges on and off the stage. Dan Murphy, Urban’s longest serving faculty member, also retired at the end of 2017. As one of the first of many practitioners of great teaching at Urban, his inspiring history classes and the many administrative roles he held in the school’s early years made a profound impact on Urban’s culture and curriculum. We thank Frances, Wendy and Dan for their outstanding service to Urban over the course of their careers. Our thanks go out to the extraordinary volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to Urban. In addition to all of our dedicated Trustees, we would like to thank Parent/Guardian Association Co-Presidents Lexi Olian and Lisa Hartwig, Capital Campaign Chair Regan Pritzker, Alumni Council President Jared Dowell (’99) and Auction Chair Ilysa Goldblatt. Special thanks also are extended to our Annual Fund Co-Chairs Tom Levine and Wendy Miller, whose leadership helped the campaign surpass $1.3 million. We extend our deepest thanks to all of our donors who supported Urban in 2017-18. The investment of our generous community is humbling, and we are profoundly grateful.REPORT FROMHEAD OF SCHOOL & BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIREve Niquette Chair, Board of TrusteesGeneva (’16), Charlotte (’17) and Sophira (’21) PohlMark Salkind (’70) Head of School4 | THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2017-182017-18 PARENT/GUARDIAN BOARDCO-PRESIDENTSLisa HartwigLexi OlianSECRETARYTaly JolishTREASURERJaemie AltmanADMISSIONS CO-CHAIRSKristin Baron Elise CollinsJulie KimInga LarsenBehruz Nassre Wing ChanALL-SCHOOL PICNIC CO-CHAIRSJD BeltranDanny DeLeonJohn Musgrove Kevin O’ConnorJim SarrailAdam SchneibergLizzie SchneibergClaudia VittoriaURBANREADSLisa AuerScott Elaine Case AUCTION CHAIRIlysa GoldblattP-IDEAS CO-CHAIRSJoanna FosterPeng Ngin Alex WongFACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION CO-CHAIRSFrances CobbMichelle LongJulie Levine Daniela ManningJulie MayerBeth SilvestriNOMINATING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRSMeg HartChristina MurphyPARENTS’ COALITION OF BAY AREA HIGH SCHOOLS CO-CHAIRSBeth MilesJulianna DeardorffANNUAL ATHLETICS BANQUETJaemie AltmanSara WittURBAN 101 FOR PARENTS CO-CHAIRSKristen DanielMaryam MohitURBANWEAR/BLUESWEAR CO-CHAIRS Jennifer BalzerShane CayaNicole CuadraGretchen McDougallJaimie SanfordPARENT ENGAGEMENT CO-CHAIRSSarah LipsonAnnie RossWalter Van RielMaureen McAvoy 2021 FRESHMAN CLASS REPRESENTATIVESRuth Chang HessJulie HaleyJulia NielsenDiane PhilipsGitta Salomon Lela MeansMartina Murphy2020 SOPHOMORE CLASSREPRESENTATIVESKatie Hansen Rena LambertChristina Murphy Dana ReinhardtLynn Pescherine Sandy SloanRoss Uchimura2019 JUNIOR CLASS REPRESENTATIVESLaura Hill Wendy Miller Lizzie Schneiberg Adam SchneibergOlive Thaler2018 SENIOR CLASS REPRESENTATIVESLisa AuerScott Elaine CaseWalter Van Riel2018 GRAD NIGHT COMMITTEEKris BaileyWilliam FleishhackerGina LeungSusan MastoAnn TrunkoNancy WeberCharlotte WorsleyTHE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 | 5SERVING AS A CO-PRESIDENT OF THE PARENT/GUARDIAN ASSOCIATION (PGA) was an honor and also a remarkable opportunity to observe this extraordinary community from many vantage points. As parents, we have the chance to witness the enthusiasm and expertise of the teachers as they mold our children into knowledgeable, self-reflective and inspired young adults ready to move on to the next challenge. As a volunteer, I have also been able to witness the deep dedication to excellence you will find at Urban, from the reception desk to the boardroom, where amazing and talented people are devoted to fulfilling Urban’s mission. Among this community, I include the parents who show up in astounding numbers and with a breathtaking array of skills, talents and backgrounds. The year began with the rollout of Urban’s strategic plan, Urban Thrives 2023, which emphasizes Urban’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable community. The PGA has taken this particularly to heart. In response to this directive, we initiated the Parent Engagement Committee that continues to gain momentum. Students at Urban benefit from in-depth curriculum that helps them understand their own developing identities and respect and celebrate the paths that other students chose. The PGA endeavored to keep pace by partnering with Dean of Equity and Inclusion Clarke Weatherspoon to host a series of parent seminars, and we continued to provide an opportunity for dialogue during P-IDEAS (Parents for Inclusion Diversity and Equity at School) gatherings. This is a small part of what we accomplished in a year. Parents devoted many hours to the annual auction, grad night, the all-school picnic, potlucks, parent coffees and much more. We hosted experts and authors, and we organized appreciation events for staff, faculty and volunteers. All of this, of course, was with the dedicated support of Urban administration and staff. It was such a privilege and delight to work alongside so many enthusiastic, creative and committed parent volunteers who have generously given so much time and talent. Special thanks go out to my fellow Executive Committee members whose engagement and insight were inspiring and appreciated: Co-President Lisa Hartwig, Treasurer Jaemie Ballesteros Altman and Secretary Taly Jolish. I also would like to express deep gratitude to all the committee members who devoted many weekends and evenings to create the welcoming and supportive events that bring the parent community together. It takes courage to show up, participate and contribute, and I am truly grateful to all the parents who help create such a rich experience for our children. Thank you! Spanning that time, her exceptionally strong rapport with students and the passion and skill she has for working with teenagers has been a hallmark of her tenure. She is able to draw students out in the theater, push them to try new things, to take risks, to open themselves up emotionally and to find the source of their creativity, and to discover their unique voice.Wendy spent 30 years of her performing arts teaching career at Urban. Generations of Urban students have learned circus skills from Wendy and worked with her in the annual musical as actors, musicians and theater technicians. Wendy’s committed support of young performers created memorable ensemble pieces, and strong and enduring relationships among Urban students. Her students learn what it truly means to be part of a team, to support one another, and as in life, to work through unexpected challenges with grace. The legacy Frances and Wendy leave behind will live on in their students and impact Urban long into the future. We are so grateful for their inspiration and mentorship over the years. Thank you, Frances and Wendy!FRANCES EVENS ANDWENDY PARKMAN8 | THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18DAN MURPHYThe Dan Murphy Fund for Educational Innovation and Faculty Growth In December 2017, we bid farewell to Dan Murphy, Urban’s longest serving faculty member! Across his 50 years at Urban, Dan continued to learn as he taught each new generation of students. His influence and legacy as an educational innovator are evident throughout the school in myriad ways. To celebrate his retirement, the entire community came together to raise money for The Dan Murphy Fund for Educational Innovation and Faculty Growth, honoring Dan’s commitment to continued learning and intellectual renewal for our most important resource, the Urban faculty. Thank you to the donors listed below, whose contributions will establish a legacy that broadens the foundation of the learning community Dan helped to create and infuse Urban’s classrooms with creativity and excitement for years to come.Anonymous (10)Anonymous In honor of Joana Bryar-MatonsJohn Amador-Whittier (’79)Jeremy Anderson (’92)Jacqueline Babin (’84) & Alan FoxHolly Badgley (’69) & Peter SternPhilippe Becker (’85)Nicole Berkin (’99)Carol (’78) & David BerlutiAnnemarie Bernardone & Robert ClarkClea Blockey (’94)David Boddy (’09)Brisen & Scott BradyAdam Braverman (’89)Marisa Breall (’06)Caroline Hayward Brinckerhoff (’01) & Robin BrinckerhoffAlbert Brown (’12)Jesse Brown (’06)Céline Buehl (’09)Jane Burns (’70) & John GordonMahealani G.
