2018REPORT TO THECOMMUNITYOUR Community IN FOCUSTHE BIG PICTURE01 | GGBCF.ORG - REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2018| 02TOGETHER,WE CONTINUE TO EMBRACE OUR COMMUNITYWITH PRIDE AND A SENSEOF RESPONSIBILITY FORFUTURE GENERATIONS.Dear Friends, This is our community. Twenty-seven years ago, visionary citizens embraced that sentiment when they created the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. Their shared vision was to ensure our community would thrive today and for generations to come. This continues to be the driving force behind our work, whether it means addressing larger systemic issues or providing financial support for programming to meet the needs of people today. This past year marked a notable milestone in the Foundation’s work as we surpassed $100 million in grants made to local nonprofit organizations. As we celebrate the growth and progress of our region, we ask a simple question: What will be accomplished with the next $100 million? As momentum grows, it will not take another 27 years to reach that milestone. This report highlights our progress, our investments and the way people, businesses and organizations work to benefit our community. This past fiscal year, ending June 30, saw unprecedented growth with nearly $20 million in new contributions across 628 individual funds. These contributions range from multimillion-dollar gifts, which created important new grant cycles, to gifts of $100 or less, which made up more than 40% of all contributions. We believe in the important role nonprofits play within our community and want to create awareness of their work while encouraging all citizens to get involved. In this spirit, we launched Give BIG Green Bay in partnership with the Green Bay Packers. Our first community-wide giving day highlighted 31 nonprofits and raised more than $800,000 across 11 fields of interest. Contributions came from 2,684 generous donors, of which nearly 40% self-identified as new contributors. The impact this year and moving forward will be a game-changer for philanthropy in our community. As our foundation continues to grow, our grant making continues to increase with nearly $9 million distributed across all programs including a record $314,000 in scholarships. Grant spending of 7.5% across all funds, including 13.5% from donor advised funds, exceeds both traditional private and similar community foundations in size and scope nationally. As a community, we care. We contribute. We get involved.Together, we continue to embrace our community with pride and a sense of responsibility for future generations. We would like to express our deepest thanks to you, our donors, volunteers, directors, staff, and friends, for all you do to make the greater Green Bay area a wonderful place to live. This notable milestone represents years of effort and scores of donors working to make a tremendous impact in our community. It’s a shared triumph demonstrating the extraordinary power of collaboration. “With every issue, cause, discussion, and grant made, a path is laid toward solutions that make us a stronger community for the next generation,” said Dennis Buehler, President and CEO of the Community Foundation. The $100 million invested throughout our community symbolizes the countless ways generosity is working here. These dollars have funded programs to feed children, improve our neighborhoods, educate students, protect our environment, care for our elderly, provide shelter, grow arts and culture opportunities, improve public safety, and protect the most vulnerable of our community. It proves that an ambitious vision first proposed by community leaders in 1991 - when the Foundation was created - can become a remarkable reality. And dreams of inspiring and encouraging charitable giving to strengthen our community can come true 100 million times over. What they didn’t know was just where to invest those dollars.“We didn’t want to fall into a sequence of funding the usual good causes. Instead, we wanted to make a big, bold impact where no one else could,” said Tom Selk, President of the Stand Together Foundation. “The expertise of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation guided us to a solution. Now we can make the greatest impact with our funds.”By partnering with the Community Foundation and establishing Stand Together, the group’s mission to work collaboratively with nonprofit agencies and break the cycle of poverty is clearly in focus. Stand Together’s investment provides $250,000 each year in new grants to nonprofits changing the lives of those most in need in our community. The Community Foundation partners with donors to find lasting solutions, connects with organizations driving those solutions and provides opportunities to those in need. By leveraging the Foundation’s expertise and community engagement, donors have access to a broader web of information and can address the specific needs of our evolving community.Together, we can change things in a big, bold way.BOYS & GIRLS CLUBOF GREATER GREEN BAYThe Funds for Greater Green Bay supported Camera Crew, part of the Youth Arts Initiative at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay, helping low-income youth develop problem-solving skills, creative self-expression, and social and emotional competencies through high-quality arts education.05 | GGBCF.ORG - REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2018| 0607 | GGBCF.ORG - REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2018A NEW GENERATION OF POSSIBILITIES| 08HANDS ON DECK Hands on Deck received funding from the Funds for Greater Green Bay grants program to collaborate with the Brown County PALS program and provide youth, referred by child protective services, with one-on-one mentoring through a summer boat building and rowing apprenticeship. 07 | GGBCF.ORG - REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2018| 08When Abigail Robinson was a high school sophomore in Algoma, she conducted a survey to learn how her fellow students were doing socially and emotionally. What she discovered led to life-changing initiatives for her community. “When I asked students what their least favorite thing about school was, the response was, ‘going home.’ That’s when I realized we needed to do something to help,” said Robinson, now a senior. The first thing Robinson and other young leaders did was establish a mentorship program between high school and elementary students. That led to an after-school program, a fledgling initiative that was all heart but lacked focus.A planning grant from the Community Foundation’s Basic Needs Giving Partnership gave the Algoma team the space to innovate and collaborate. Joining other efforts in their community to address the same issues, they created a groundbreaking program to encourage resiliency in youth and improve the mental health of their district’s students. The Basic Needs Giving Partnership distributes nearly $1 million each year throughout our community in grants that allow nonprofits to fail forward and learn as they go, experimenting with creative approaches and cutting-edge strategies. The opportunity to plan and innovate formed the Resiliency Development Strategies for Algoma’s Youth, now underway in the Algoma School District through a three-year Basic Needs Giving Partnership implementation grant, and it’s a model for districts nationwide. The Community Foundation’s Basic Needs Giving Partnership, a collaboration with the U.S. Venture Open Fund for Basic Needs, the J. J. Keller Foundation and other community donors, offers layered support that opens the door to new outcomes and unexplored opportunities.Breaking New GroundTOTAL GRANTSDISTRIBUTED$8.9MNext >
