SHIPPAX DESIGNS19 39 YEARS 1980 - 2019 Presentation of selected ferry, cruise and ro-ro prototypes delivered 1 July 2018 - 30 June 2019. Theme vessel: VISBORG. PHOTO: GEORGE GIANNAKIS Upfront Fifteen years ago, Shippax dedicated Guide to Rederi AB Gotland’s then brand-new VISBY. Built by Guangzhou Shipyard In- ternational (GSI), VISBY was the first ever ro-pax ‘made in China’ for international interests. Rederi AB Gotland returned to GSI for its next-generation pair, the successors of the 2003-built VISBY and GOTLAND. The hulls were built on the slipway of the old yard, but VISBORG and THJELVAR were actually completed by GSI’s new shipyard in Nansha. With the construction of the Gotland sisters and the opening of the new yard, GSI shifted into higher gear, becoming a leading builder of ro-pax tonnage with an enviable order book. At first sight the new generation of Gotland ferries are reminiscent of their 2003-built peers. The new ships do indeed share similarities with the older genera- tion, even the dimensions being alike. Most of the improvements made are to things that the eye doesn’t immediately see. The ships’ hull form has been further optimised and they also meet the IMO’s SRtP rules. One of the biggest changes is the use of LNG propulsion. Regarded by many – including Rederi AB Gotland – as a transition fuel, it was considered by the operator to be the best at present of a range of potential options. The distance between the Swedish mainland ports and the island of Gotland is too long to warrant the use of battery power and it’s still too early days to consider using hydrogen and fuel cells on vessels of this size. However, they are designed so that in future they can run on liquid biogas which is an altogether cleaner fuel than LNG. What follows are in-depth articles. We did our utmost to document VISBORG pro- perly in words and pictures even although the weather wasn’t always cooperating. The second half of the book is dedicated to new ferries, cruise ships and ro-ros that were delivered between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019. Collecting all these figures is a daunting task and I would like to thank our faithful contributors for having gone the extra mile in providing some obscure but useful data about the less well-known ships. A big thank you also to those shipowners, yards and naval architects who happily shared GA plans. We did our utmost to obtain as many GA plans as possible, something that is becoming ever more challenging. All the information we received is first-hand and therefore believed to be correct, but one can never completely rule out the risk of mistakes having slipped into the material. Our next annual publication, Shippax Guide 20, will feature Stena’s E-Flexer Class. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, this book will be delayed as our photographer hasn’t been able to travel with STENA ESTRID or STENA EDDA yet. But we can already promise you now that it will not disappoint as it will be jam-packed with an array of interesting articles, including interviews with the team who master- minded the development and realisation of the E-Flexer. But before embarking on the next project, let us introduce VISBORG to you. Enjoy the read!
