Patterson has been a fi x-ture in the Keizer community since 1978, when he and his wife of 41 years, Chris, moved into the Kennedy neighbor-hood to raise their family. At the time, Chet was working as a traveling auditor with the federal government, a position he soon traded for a job that allowed him to spend more time at home. That’s been a theme of his life and it shows his commitment to his family and to this community. Patterson’s problem-solv-ing skills were fi ne-tuned as a CPA during his partnership with Larry Glaze (Johnson, Glaze & Co.) and refi ned while working as the business manager at Western Baptist College (now Corban University). After leaving Western he felt called to work in the long-term care industry and accepted a position at the Mennonite Village of Albany, where he re-tired in 2012 after 23 years as the vice president of fi nance and planning. After retirement he worked as a management consultant and has fi lled in as interim chief fi nancial offi cer for a variety of senior living facilities. He was also one of the early proponents of Keizer’s incorporation as a city. As a member of the Keizer In-corporation Committee he co-authored the study that led to the successful incorpo-ration of Keizer as a city. He was elected to the fi rst city council and again in 1992. His expertise with budgets proved invaluable when he was selected as the City of Keizer’s Trying to get somewhere along River Road in Keizer the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8?In a word, don’t.That night Keizer is host to the Holiday Lights Parade sponsored by Salem Electric, meaning there will be road impacts. The parade travels southbound on River Road starting at Lockhaven Drive at 7 p.m. Dec. 8, and disbands at the intersection of River Road and Glynbrook Street North. The Keizer Police Department will have two areas closed for the parade and other activi-ties. The impact starts at 3:30 p.m., when Lockhaven Drive N. is closed to all traffi c between River and McClure Street N. to establish a parade staging area.River Road will be closed to all northbound and southbound traffi c around 6 p.m. from Plymouth Drive to Lockhaven. Northbound River Road traffi c will be diverted to Cherry Avenue NE via Plymouth Drive while southbound River Road traffi c will be diverted eastbound on Lockhaven.Prior to the parade and other events, traffi c will periodically be allowed to cross River Road at Chemawa Road, Dearborn Avenue and Manbrin Drive.River Road is expected to re-open around 9 p.m. as the parade continues southbound. Signs advising of street closures are expected will be placed leading up to the day of the parade. Police are asking for sidewalks along River Road to be kept clear of chairs until the parade starts so that disabled citizens can travel on the sidewalks.Longtime Keizerite will marshal paradefi rst budget offi cer, as well. In 1992, Patter-son was honored with the Volunteer of the Month Award and in 2009 he received the city’s fi rst Heritage Award. A humble man, He is quick to point out that many others in the city are just as deserving of recogni-tion because “it takes a village.”These days, Patterson’s efforts around the community are focused on the Keizer Fire District. His involvement began after his re-tirement when he was appointed to the dis-trict’s budget committee. He now serves as President of KFD’s Board of Directors. This past year he led the effort to incorporate the Keizer Fire Foundation—a fundraising arm of KFD—as a 501c3 non-profi t entity. HOWALDOf the KeizertimesAfter two years of organizing the annu-al Keizer Holiday Lights Parade, Danielle Bethell, executive director of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce, feels as though the Chamber members and volunteers are fi nally getting a handle on the process. This time around it started with a theme. “Each year, people ask us what the theme is going to be the next time. That helped us realize how important it is and it got us thinking about it earlier,” Bethell said. The theme for this year’s parade is Christmas in Candyland and the response has been enthusiastic to say the least. “We had board members get excited about what it would look like, so I knew we had a winner. When we tell people, it seems to generate a spark of creativity quickly,” she said. The Keizer Holiday Lights Parade sponsored by Salem Electric arrives on River Road North Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. Salem Electric has opted to become a legacy sponsor of the parade into thefuture, but there is no set time for their engagement to expire. This year, the Grand Marshal of the parade will be Chet Patterson, a longtime Keizerite and volunteer. He’s currently president of the Keizer Fire Board. “One of my favorite things is calling the people we want to be Grand Marshal and, when I called Chet, he seemed to be blown away that anyone would think of him for that honor. He’s so humble and kind,” Bethell said. Prices for entry into the parade are the same as those for the Iris Festival parade: $35 for non-profi ts, civic organizations, military organizations and per car for auto clubs; $125 for a commercial entry from Chamber members and political groups/candidates; and $175 for non-member commercial entries. Entry forms must be received at the Keizer Chamber offi ce, 6150 Ulali Drive N.E., by Nov. 19. Awards will be given for most festive, best use of lights, best choreography and best theme. Entry forms are available online at keizer-chamber.com.Last year’s parade ended up with about 70 entries and the current number is still Candyland Christmas driving lights paradelingering around two dozen, but Bethell has come to expect the procrastination on the part of participants. “We always get the most entries in the two weeks right before the parade,” she said. There’s also going to be plenty of music. Four high school bands are participating, 234th Army Band will be in the line-up, The Beat Goes On is coming down from Portland as is The Last Regiment of Syn-copated Drummers, a drumline group. The Keizer Community Band is setting up at the intersection of Chemawa Road and River Road North to accompany the parade itself. Bethell said she is hoping to enlist more food trucks to set up along the parade route to serve onlookers. So far, The Fire Pit, a pizza truck, and Willamette Valley Doughnut are committed to attending. Staging for the parade begins at 3:30 p.m. on Lockhaven Drive North between McClure Street N. and River Road. The parade will start at the intersection of Lockhaven and River Road and travel south ending at Glynbrook Street North. River Road will close at 6 p.m. to make way for the Chamber’s annual Jingle Dash, a 5K fun run, which begins at 6:15 p.m. The run will begin at the Chamber of Commerce’s new offi ce, 4118 River Road North. Registration can be completed on the Chamber Website. Run participants are encouraged to dress up and compete for the best costume award. Cookies, hot cocoa, and coffee will be waiting at the fi nish line. This is his fi rst feature fi lm.Prospect is the story of Cee (played by Sophie Thatcher) and her father (Damon played by Jay Duplass) who travel to an alien moon aiming to strike it rich harvest-ing elusive gems. The hunt turns trouble-some when the pair encounters others on the same path and Cee is forced to contend with the forest’s other ruthless inhabitants, and her own father’s greed-addled judg-ment, while carving her own path. Pedro Pascal, of Game of Thrones Fame, plays one of the fi lms primary antagonists, Ezra. Earl and his creative partner, Chris Cald-well, crowd-funded a short version of the movie almost four years ago and spent the last three years turning it into and funding it through a major Hollywood studio. Want another reason? When Earl was still a McNary student, he put together a screening of his fi rst student fi lm to raise money for a schoolmate fi ghting cancer.
