Mallory MacRae, ODLIFEOFWileyWFootball season is hereThe Keizertimes is expanding its high school sports coverage this fall and that begins here with the football preview. Not only does this section include McNary but previews of all fi ve public high schools in Salem — Sprague, West Salem, McKay, North Salem and South Salem. The 2018 season brings many changes with the biggest being realignment. McNary, West Salem, Sprague and South Salem have been placed in the new Moun-tain Valley Conference with three Bend schools —Bend, Mountain View and Summit. Mountain View and Summit have both had recent success in 5A. Mountain View fi nished the 2017 regular season 9-0 to earn the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs before falling in the semifi nals. Summit won the 5A state championship in 2015 and en-tered the state playoffs as the No. 1 seed in 2016. But with OSAA’s decision to have 6A football teams play a four-game league schedule, conferences don’t really matter. McNary plays Bend but neither Mountain View or Summit. Sprague and South Salem are playing as usual but in a non-league game. While a team may try to claim it, there will be no out-right Mountain Valley Confer-ence football champion. West Salem is clearly the team to beat in the new con-ference. With all four members of its state runner-up 4x100 relay team, Anthony Gould, Simon Thompson, Stanley Green and Jamal Murrin, now seniors on the football team, West Salem will have one of the fastest squads in the state. Thompson, the Titans new quarterback, is also the reign-ing state champion in the 110 hurdles. West Salem also returns last season’s Greater Valley Confer-ence Defensive Player of the Year Alex Hurlburt as well as Micah Pugh, an all-league First Team linebacker. McNary has two of the top recruits in the state in juniors Erik Barker and Junior Walling. Walling, who has an offer from Oregon State, is rated the No. 4 prospect in Oregon for the Class of 2020. Barker is ninth and the top quarterback in the state, accord-ing to 247sports. While the Celtics have a smaller senior class than in years past, there are several solid pieces there beginning with lineman Joshua Schmeltzer and receiver Jacob Jackson. Dyami Rios, a sophomore who dominated freshman foot-ball last season, is another in-triguing player at linebacker and possibly running back. Sprague has fi nished near the top of the league standings the past three years but returns just three starters from last season. This could be the year Mc-Nary and South Salem get re-venge on the Olympians. The Celtics haven’t defeated Sprague since 2014.South Salem also returns a lot of talent in lineman Ashton Adams, linebacker Josh Raynak, quarterback Elijah Enomoto-Haole and tight ends Diego Fuimaono and Brock Hale.North Salem and McKay, who have consistently fi nished at the bottom of the league, hope to get some relief by mov-ing down a classifi cation to 5A. But the Vikings and Royal Scots were placed in a tough league with the likes of Lebanon, South Albany, Crescent Valley and Silverton. With only three weeks of offi cial practice to prepare, coaches already feel rushed. Air quality concerns forcing many practices indoors has made it even harder on teams this year. But the 2018 season is offi -cially here, ready or not.PUBLISHERLyndon Zaitz • publisher@keizertimes.comASSOCIATE EDITORDerek Wiley • news@keizertimemes.comADVERTISING ACCOUNT REPRESENTATIVEPaula Moseley • advertising@keizertimes.comGRAPHIC DESIGNER& PRODUCTION MANAGERAndrew Jackson • graphics@keizertimes.comCONTRIBUTORHerb Swett • kt@keizertimes.comINTERNRandom Pendragon • intern@keizertimes.comPublished by Keizertimes142 Chemawa Rd N, Keizer, OR 97303PHONE 503-390-1051 • FAX 503-390-8023Elizabeth SmithSr. Loan ConsultantNMLS ID 228191Caliber Home Loans, Inc., 3701 Regent Blvd Irving, TX 75063 NMLS ID #15622 (http://www.nmlsconsumeraccess.org/EntityDetails.aspx COMPANY/15622). 1-800-401-6587. McNARY CELTICSMcNary vows to be tougher in 2018By DEREK WILEYOf the KeizertimesMcNary reached the second round of the state playoffs last season for the fi rst time since 2013.But the Celtics didn’t play their best in the biggest games, particularity in blowout losses to Sprague and West Salem. “We’re working on our toughness and our tenacity, which people think of as physical things but they’re mental things as well,” said Jeff Auvinen, who enters his fourth season as McNary’s head coach. The Celtics return eight players who started on at least one side of the ball last season, and due to a lack of depth, more players will be counted on to play both ways. On the offensive line, seniors Joshua Schmeltzer and Wyatt Sherwood are back at guard and tackle. But Auvinen wants both guys on defense, where they were used sparingly last season. “I wish they could play every play but we need them on offense,” Auvinen said. “I don’t know if we can because of our pace and it’s a tough game anyway. In the trenches like that is very demanding.”One player that will defi nitely play offense and defense is Junior Walling, who led the Celtics with 991 yards rushing and nine touchdowns while also leading McNary’s defense at outside linebacker.Walling will move inside this season to Mike linebacker. “As far as our defense goes, he’s the overall leader and he’ll be that way this year and next year,” Auvinen said of Walling, a junior who has started on defense since he was a freshman. “Mike allows him to play the whole fi eld. It allows him to run sideline to sideline. Junior has all the skills to play inside, outside. He’s got good strength and quickness and good instincts. I think he’s going to lead by example. He’s also become more of a vocal guy this year.”Dyami Rios, a sophomore who dominated freshman ball last year, could follow a similar path as Walling. “He works like a beast in the weight room and really has continued to keep his speed and quickness,” Auvinen said. “He’s going to take some people by surprise coming up from the freshman level and playing really well.”While Rios will primarily play outside linebacker, McNary offensive coordinator Brad Emmert also has a plan for him at running back whenever he shows he’s ready. “First year varsity guys we try to focus on one side of the ball,” Emmert said. “I have a plan for him but it’s going to depend on how he progresses. He’s going to be a stud, no doubt.”Senior Robert Benson is another kid who will play both ways, getting carries in the backfi eld and also snaps at strong safety. Senior Jacob Jackson, who led the Celtics in receiving with 562 yards and four touchdowns last season, will start at free safety.“I like how these kids are running around, how enthusiastic they are.” — Jeff Auvinen,McNary head coachPlease see TOUGH, Page 4Aug. 31 vs North MedfordSept. 7 at West Linn Sept. 14 at Tualatin Sept. 21 at Tumwater. FAST TURNAROUND TIME!MVP! “I’ve never had a kid who will catch the ball in traffi c the way that he does,” Emmert said of Jackson. “He has no worries about getting hit. He understands space. It’s stuff that you really can’t teach. I am jacked to see what he does this year. He’s in better physical condition than he’s ever been. He’s such a tough kid.”Noah Bach, another senior, will move back from the defensive line to outside linebacker. On offense, he’ll also gets snaps at H-back. For the fi rst time in three seasons, McNary knows who its starting quarterback will be as junior Erik Barker returns after throwing for 2,252 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. “It’s just going to make us better,” Emmert said. “We were good last year offensively. In fact, we were the best (statistically) since I’ve been here. But I expect us to take even another step by getting a little bit more elaborate with what we do offensively.”Barker is physically more mature than last season. “He throws a much more complete game,” Emmert said. “He can throw deep outs. He can throw deep posts. His deep ball has improved a ton and that’s one of the things that we’ve focused on.”While Barker is clearly the starter, McNary also has a capable backup quarterback in senior Ryan Bamford. TOUGH,continued from Page 3“He would start at a lot of schools,” Emmert said. “We’re going to try to use Ryan some this season because I think he is a different style of kid. I think he’s a tough kid. It’s nice to have some stability there and be able to focus on some other positions.”With the graduation of McNary’s second and third leading receivers, senior Griffi n Oliveira is ready to step in. “He has worked his tail off,” Emmert said of Oliveira. “Last year, he was committed but not as committed as he is now. He’s worked so hard in the offseason. He dominated at the freshman level three years ago and he’s got his body in great physique.”Devyn Schurr, another senior, has been more consistent catching the ball this summer, while Nigel Harris and Riley Flores will fi ll out the receiving corp. Oliveira, Schurr and Harris could also play on defense in the secondary.“We’re probably going to need to play more guys both ways but we’re also going to need some guys to step up and spell some of those kids so they can rest and play at their best,” Auvinen said.Ian Koenig (OL/DL), Mike Ridgeway (OL/DL), Nico Sandoval (RB/CB), Noah Lelack (S), Layton Thurlow (RB) and Andrew Brown (H-back) are other players to watch.“I like how these kids are running around, how enthusiastic they are,” Auvinen said. “They’re bringing a lot of energy. It’s a fun group of kids that are working hard. I just wish our numbers were a little better as far as depth goes.” KEIZERTIMES/Derek WileyJacob Jackson, left, led the Celtics in receiving last season with 47 catches for 562 yards and four touchdowns. Noah Bach will be one of McNary’s leaders on both offense and defense this season. *Season passes only valid for home games.Email Joe Egli — President@McNaryABC.comORDER YOURS TODAYYou can also support McNary while advertisingyour businessSee your logo on our NEW LED SCOREBOARD or hang your banner for as little as $250!SUPPORTYOUR CELTICSDID YOU KNOW?McNary doesn’t get to keep 100% of admission sales at the gate. It was amazing. I think a lot of people are excited about the Oregon State offer because it’s close and there’s a bunch of Beaver fans out here so I think it’s pretty cool getting that offer.”Walling’s dad played football at Oregon State and the family had season tickets until Junior was old enough to play youth football and Saturday’s became about his games. But the Wallings still attend at least one or two Beaver games a year.Walling isn’t as familiar with the other schools.“I’ve been to OSU tons of times and I know that the best,” Walling said. “I’m trying to learn about other schools and how each school is different and which school best fi ts me academically and athletically.”Walling mostly stays in contact with coaches through Twitter. Along with Oregon State, Oregon, Washington, Boise State, Utah, UCLA and Eastern Washington are showing the most interests. He is rated the No. 1 high school inside linebacker in the northwest for the Class of 2019 and 2020 by 247 sports as well as the No. 14 2020 inside linebacker in the country and No. 4 2020 prospect in Oregon at any position. Walling was invited to the Adidas Rivals Combine in March, the Nike Opening in Las Vegas in May, May Madness featuring the top 150 prospects in the northwest and Saturday Night Lights Camp at the University of Oregon in June. “It was just fun competing against such great talent and such great coaching,” Walling said. “I just love competing against all those kids. A lot of coaches give me tips on what I need to improve on, which I love, being more explosive and stuff like that.”Working out with Jake Forshey at Forshey Training Systems in Salem four days a week, Walling has gotten both stronger and faster. He weighs more than 220 pounds after playing at 210 last season.Walling hasn’t decided when he will commit. “Whenever it feels right and see what else comes my way and I’ll choose after that,” Walling said. Most important is academ-ics when picking a college. Sprague’s roster most inexperienced in yearsBy DEREK WILEYOf the KeizertimesJay Minyard is 49-16 in six seasons as the head coach of Sprague High School. But this season will likely be his toughest job as the Olympians return just three players who started on Friday nights a year ago. “It’s the youngest team that I’ve had since I’ve been here, without a doubt,” Minyard said. “We’re so young and there’s so many kids that are going to be on the fi eld for us that have not played on a Friday night before that it’s really hard to say what we’re going to look like. I like to think that we’re going to be pretty tough but you just never know.”The strength of Sprague’s team should be on the line where seniors Eli Larson and Jacob Luna will play on both sides of the ball. Middle linebacker Landon Davis is the only other returning starter.“Other than that, we are going to be new everywhere and every position is absolutely positively wide open,” Minyard said. On defense, the Olympians must replace the production of defensive end Teagan Quitoriano, who will be a freshman at Oregon State. Sprague will also have a new signal caller as Spencer Plant, back-to-back All-Greater Valley Conference First Team quarterback, graduated. Three players, senior Ethan Flanigan, juniors Elias Polanski and Ethan Johnson, a transfer from West Salem, were competing for the starting job when practice began on Aug. 13. Flanigan was thrust into action at the end of last season in a 56-7 loss to Jesuit in the second round of the state playoffs after Plant suffered a concussion in the fi rst round. Flanigan completed just 5 of 16 passes for 36 yards in the rout. They’re just awesome to coach. They’re great kids.”The Olympians will get tested early with games against Liberty, Lakeridge and Central Catholic to open the season. All three were playoff teams a year ago with Central Catho-lic advancing to the quarterfi -nals, falling by three points to state champion Clackamas. “We’ll defi nitely fi nd out pretty quick how good we are,” Minyard said. With the 2017 Greater Valley Conference offensive and defensive players of the year, Anthony Gould and Alex Hurlburt, returning, this season is no different.“I don’t mind as a coach saying we’re talented enough to be league champions and make a playoff run,” West Salem head coach Shawn Stanley said. “I’m not scared to say that. If we don’t, we didn’t do a very good job as coaches.” Along with Gould, who was also voted special teams return man of the year, and Hurlburt, the Titans also bring back linebacker Micah Pugh and cornerback Stanley Green, who were both selected to the All-GVC First Team defense last season. But West Salem does have question marks entering the 2018 season. The Titans return zero starters on both the offensive and defensive line.Hurlburt played on the defensive line last season but is moving to linebacker. “It’s crazy to think two years in a row we replace pretty much the entire line,” Stanley said. “I’m encouraged and feel real positive about those guys but until you’re tested on a Friday night that’s the part that’s unknown.”Senior Daniel McNeely will be counted on to lead both lines. Holden Whipple is an athletic sophomore that could break out. West Salem’s strength is team speed as Gould and Green along with Simon Thompson and Jamal McMurrin all ran on the Titans 4x100 relay team that placed second in the OSAA Track and Field State Championships last spring. McMurrin will play receiver and defensive back for West Salem this season. Thompson, the state champion in the 110 hurdles, is the team’s new quarterback. But Stanley said Thompson, who has already made his mark with the Titans in previous seasons at free safety, is more than just a runner. “He’s been the consummate team guy and waiting his turn and he can do some things that no quarterback that I’ve had can do and I’m really excited,” Stanley said. “He fi t a ball in a window 40 yards down fi eld. If he gets out in the open, there’s not a lot of guys, even on our team, that are going to catch him.”Thompson will also continue to play defense.“He has to for us,” Stanley said. “He’s too much of an impact player.” Please see SPEED, Page 11Aug. 31 at Lake Oswego Sept. 7 vs Bend Sept. 14 at Grant Sept. 21 vs Sheldon Sept. 28 at Beaverton Oct. 5 vs South Salem Oct. 12 at Mountain View Oct. 19 vs McNary Oct. 26 at SpragueSCHEDULENext >
