Coaches, players and even reporters come back refreshed from summer break. Every team is undefeated and believes this is the year they bring home a league championship. At McNary, two programs, volleyball and cross country, have new head coaches, which breeds even more optimism. So with that in mind, here are fi ve (one for every sport) bold but also positive predictions for 2017.McNARY'S FOOTBALLPROGRAM CONTINUES TO RISE TO ANOTHER LEVELIn a poll of all nine Greater Valley Conference coaches, the Celtics were voted to fi nish fourth. I'm picking McNary to place second behind only Sprague. Sure, the Celtics graduated two Division-I athletes who played both ways and a quarterback that passed for nearly 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, but something clicked at the end of last season when McNary went to West Salem and knocked off the Titans. The Celtics believe they can compete against the best teams in the conference, which shouldn't be underestimated. While the West Salem game is the one McNary fans will remember, the 28-7 win over West Albany was nearly as impressive. Without their top receiver, the Celtics ran the ball 53 times for 199 yards. With leading rusher Lucas Garvey back and joined by sophomore Junior Walling, McNary should have a stronger running game in 2017, and while throwing the deep ball is fun, running it and playing defense are the keys to winning championships. The Celtics also have a favorable schedule with Sprague, McMinnville and West Salem all at home. There are questions. Do the Celtics have the offensive line to consistently run the ball? Will a lack of depth hurt McNary in the fourth quarter of big games? The wildcard is sophomore quarterback Erik Barker, who heading into the jamboree was listed as the starter. Four of McNary's six league wins were decided by less than a touchdown. How does Barker react in those crunch-time moments?XC SENDS MORERUNNERS TO STATEAfter McNary was shut out of the state cross country meet last season, at least two runners will make the trip in 2017. The obvious name is senior Kailey Doutt, who missed last year in large part due to an IT band injury that slowed her down at the conference meet. But Doutt qualifi ed for state as a freshman and sophomore. After injuries plagued her junior cross country and track seasons, Doutt is hungry to compete and most importantly healthy. The other runner who should make an immediate splash is freshman Ella Repp. It was Repp, after all, not Doutt, who led the team in mileage this summer. Repp also spent a week at the Steens Mountain Altitude Running Camp, which one day included a 24-mile run/hike. Watch out for the Lady Celts to fi ght for a top-four fi nish in the Greater Valley Conference as Repp is part of a talented freshmen class. GIRLS SOCCER TEAM DOESN'T NEED PLAY-IN GAMELast season, the Lady Celts fi nished seventh in the Greater Valley Conference but were able to earn a play-in game thanks to their power ranking. McNary then won the play-in game to reach the state playoffs for the fi rst time since 2009. The Lady Celts will fi nish inside the top four in the GVC in 2017 and won't need a play-in game to make the state tournament for the second straight season. McNary graduated a strong senior predictionsLIFEOFWileyWPlease see PREDICT, Page 4for the 2017fall seasonPAGE 4, McNARY FALL SPORTS PREVIEW, SEPTEMBER 2017Change Your Life With Us.NOW IN YOURNEIGHBORHOOD!NEAR GOODWILL & BI-MART — IN KEIZER3850 RIVER RD N • 503-584-1950 • physiqfi tness.comMembership options starting at $1000 /mo.+ 1 Time EnrollmentALL INCLUSIVEMEMBERSHIP$3999 /mo.FIT class but played six underclassmen in the playoffs and head coach A.J. Nash has been excited about this incoming group since the beginning of last season. The Lady Celts have also added Isabella Haselip, a transfer from Silverton, who scored a goal in the Lady Foxes upset of Summit in the semifi nals of the 5A state playoffs last season.MCNARY BOYS ALSOJUMP INTO TOP FOURMcNary’s boys soccer team followed a similar path as the girls, fi nishing outside of the top four in its league and needing a play-in victory to reach the state tournament. What crippled the Celtics last season was their struggle to score goals. After scoring 40 each of the past two seasons, McNary only had 29 in 2016. Part of the problem was the Celtics were counting on two freshmen, Luis Lopez and Jack Baez, to lead the offense. With a season under their belt, the goal should look much larger to the now sophomores. McNary also has a talented group of freshman forwards coming up. PREDICT,continued from Page 3In goal, junior Sebastian Lopez returns in his third as the starter. Knocking off McMinnville, who hasn’t lost a league game in the past two seasons, will be tough, but the Celtics should have the talent to at least fi nish in the top four in the GVC. VOLLEYBALL TEAMRETURNS TO FORMAfter fi nishing second in the Greater Valley Conference in 2014 and third in 2015, the McNary volleyball team dropped to sixth last season. The Lady Celts weren’t even competitive with the top three teams, getting swept 0-3 by West Salem, South Salem and Sprague. While injuries hurt McNary down the stretch, especially as setter Sam Van Voorhis missed time, something was missing from the Lady Celts last season.Sydney Hunter, who was one of the best players in the league last season, leading the team in blocks and kills, graduated, but McNary returns eight players, including Van Voorhis, with varsity experience.A new head coach, Crystal DeMello, a former player at McNary who knows how to win, should also bring stability to a program with its third head coach in three years. ■(Derek Wiley is the associate editor of the Keizertimes)SEPTEMBER 2017, McNARY FALL SPORTS PREVIEW, PAGE 5All game times are 7:00 p.m.Sept. 1 vs North SalemSept. 8 at South SalemSept. 15 vs SpragueSept. 22 at McKaySept. 29 at Forest GroveOct. 6 vs McMinnville (Homecoming)Oct. 12 at West AlbanyOct. 20 at North MedfordOct. 27 vs West SalemCeltics poised to take next stepBy DEREK WILEYOf the KeizertimesAfter years of hovering around .500, McNary took a step up, fi nishing 6-3 last season, culminating with a 33-32 win at co-conference champion West Salem.Head coach Jeff Auvinen believes the Celtics can continue on that trajectory in 2017. “I thought we really competed well last year and played most of the time to the best of our ability,” Auvinen said. “To continue that trend would be nice. It's another year, another set of kids knowing the system and what we're trying to do. Second year running the same defense. We're poised for another improvement. We're trying to get better all the time with our ef-fort, attitude, focus.”McNar y graduated 25 seniors off of last year's squad, in-cluding Kol-by Barker and Brendan Van Voorhis, who hardly ever left the fi eld and were all-conference selections at multiple positions. “We need some guys to step up,” Auvinen said.Senior nose guard Tim Kiser is the only starter returning on the defensive line. But he's not worried.“I believe we're going to have a really strong defensive line this year,” Kiser said. “Even though we lost most of our starters last year from being seniors, we still have a lot of people showing that they have the power, skill and strength to show other teams that we're nothing to mess around with.”Wyatt Sherwood, Sequoyah Rios, Freddy Jimna, Hakam Nagra and Josh Schmeltzer, who was second team all-league on the offensive line last season as a sophomore, are getting reps on the new defensive line. Seniors Jakoby Doke and Brayden Ebbs lead the linebackers. I've always been kind of a leader for the team. It's just a bigger spot for me and I like bing in that position.”Doke sees McNary's defense as being faster and more athletic this season. Sophomore Junior Walling is moving from safety, where he started as a freshman, to linebacker. “Our starting linebacker crew is really experienced with Jakoby and Braden helping me out a lot with the change and it's been really good,” Walling said. “We don't have a lot of depth, but we're really experienced with our starters. I think our defense is going to be really good this year.”Lucas Garvey, who had nine interceptions last season, is back at cornerback, where he'll be joined by fellow senior Jose Solorio. Auvinen expects another set of close games in 2017.“The whole league is very competitive, like it was last year,” Auvinen said. “I think it will be very similar to last year, if not the same.” ■NEXT STEP,continued from Page 5KEIZERTIMES/Derek WileyFreddy Jimna and Tim Kiser lead the Celtics out onto the fi eld before a 2016 game. After a three-way battle through the summer, Erik Barker was named the starter at quarterback beating out senior Casey Toavs and junior Ryan Bamford heading into the team's jamboree. “I've always been confi dent that I could do it,” Barker said. “As a sophomore, I need to demonstrate more leadership because I'm young. I'll show that more and keep doing what I've been doing.”While Barker is the biggest of the quarterbacks, what set him apart was his mental game.“He and Bamford have been neck-and-neck and Erik's mental approach over the last two weeks both in preparation and also in game management has elevated him just a little bit,” said McNary offensive coordinator Brad Emmert, who also called Barker a “game manager.”“First year varsity guys, freshmen and sophomore, you typically don't want to put too much on them,” Emmert added. “He's plenty confi dent in handling the offense and making all the throws.”Barker has come a long way since last year when he was the quarterback of the freshmen team while Toavs and Bamford split snaps for the junior varsity. “Erik was a 5-8 freshmen who was afraid of contact,” Emmert said. “Now he's 6-2, 6-3. He hasn't been in a situation where he actually liked to get hit because he's been a little bit undersized. So now here he is, one of the bigger guys, growing like his brother (Kolby) did. Obviously in practice we're not going to light him up but we've been hitting him with pads.”While McNary's quarterback has been a dual threat the last couple of seasons with Josiah Gilbert, last's year's starter, running for nearly 500 yards and nine touchdowns, Barker was the fi rst to admit that's not his strength. “I'm more of a pro style quarterback, not really a runner,” he said. “I can get it done with my arm.”The yards on the ground will come from senior Lucas Garvey, who led the Celtics with 533 yards rushing to go with 223 yards receiving last season. He'll be joined by sophomore Junior Walling.“It's going to be a little different this year,” Garvey said of the offense. “But it's awesome. They're (Barker and Walling) like one of us. We don't treat them like they're younger than us. They're really nice kids, too.”After starting at safety as a freshmen, Walling will play on both sides of the ball this season.“I'm really liking offense now and Young o ense not slowing downKEIZERTIMES/Derek WileySophomores Erik Barker, at quarterback, and Junior Walling, at running back, may lead the McNary offense in 2017. They’re both kids that can run between the tackles but also kids we can run screens to and utilize in the passing game.”McNary graduated its two top receivers, including Brendan Van Voorhis, who accounted for 943 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. But Emmert believes the Celtics have the depth to make up for the loss in yardage and touchdowns. Senior Jonathan Williams, who caught nine passes for 125 yards, including a game-winning 30-yard touchdown in the rain at McMinnville, leads a receiving group that Emmert said goes 11 to 12 deep. Mentally, I feel way better about everything. I’m not as scared as last year. I feel way more confi dent about this season. I was a little nervous at the beginning but I got more used to it by the end of the season.”With more time in the weight room, Walling said he’s gained 20 pounds since last season, which Emmert admitted made it easier to plug him in as a two-way player.“As a freshmen, we wanted him to focus on one side of the ball and get comfortable,” Emmert said. “You put a freshman at the 6A level and try to play him both ways, it’s not a good deal.
