Keizer Happy Days gave way to Keizer Days which gave way to KeizerFEST. More than 30 years ago our community’s biggest event took on a new name: the Keizer Iris Festival, to celebrate the bearded iris grown in the area. Keizer even took on the self-proclaimed title as the Iris Capital of the World. The big weekend of activities, entertainment and the Valley Credit Service Iris Parade is again called KeizerFEST. What is the difference? Since its inception in the late 1980s festival organizers have proclaimed May 1 to May 31 as Iris Festival—which corresponds roughly to the bloom season of the bearded iris. The third weekend in May—the height of the bloom season—has long been the focus of the community. That weekend has been called KeizerFEST by just about everyone over the years. You can say we’re just going back to the roots. This year’s festival theme is “The Keizer Way.” There is a Keizer way of doing things—with teamwork, frugality, respectfully. In Keizer we measure twice and cut once, meaning we plan carefully to assure our projects are completed correctly. The Keizer Chamber of Commerce has designed and planned a festival the community will enjoy. If you like entertainment, KeizerFEST is for you. If you enjoy fl owers, Keizer has that in bunches at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens just north of Keizer. Keizer’s Distinguished Young Woman program will be held on Saturday, May 12, followed the next morning with the annual Mother’s Day Pancake breakfast presented by the Keizer Volunteer Firefi ghters at the fi re hall. Both of these events are part of the festival. We invite Keizer to enjoy all that is offered during the month of May and especially during KeizerFEST with its centerpiece: the Valley Credit Service Iris Parade on Saturday, May 18. There are many events and activities to enjoy. This guide will give you all the information you want about live music, the various runs including the half marathon, the car show and more. Have fun at KeizerFEST. It’s the Keizer way.Dave WaleryScott WhiteCo-Chairs, KeizerFestMAY 2018, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO KEIZERFEST, PAGE 3The Offi cial Guideto the 2018 KeizerFESTwas produced byEric A. If you’re talking about KeizerFEST, then the answer is a resounding, “Yes.”For the fi rst time in decades, the Iris Festival is changing its name to KeizerFEST. The KeizerFEST name has always been emblazoned across the big tent where many of the activities take place, but it is taking a step forward to become the name of the overall festival. The annual parade will still be known as the Iris Parade.“We wanted to merge the two a bit more in peoples’ minds because it really is a celebration of the city,” said Danielle Bethell, executive director of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the usual fare of parades and live music, there are some changes to this year’s festival. Last year, the festival committee set out to better track the attention that individual activities received. That’s leading to some changes in the way things operate. Selling all-day wristbands that entitle attendees to unlimited rides proved a success and the program is back this year. Through May 15, carnival wristbands can be purchased at the Keizer Chamber of Commerce, 6150 Ulali Drive N.E., or El Patron Mexican Grill, 3844 River Road N. Wristbands are $20 and include unlimited rides, two free carnival games and a free snack – from a pre-selected menu – at the Funtastic food booth. The other big change, as a result of better tracking, was that the Chamber discovered many of the attendees decided to do so at the last minute. “The result of that is people will be seeing a lot more about the festival in the week leading up to it on social media and in other venues,” Bethell said. Other changes include entertainment at the Main Tent on the campus of the Lions Club. On Friday, May 18, Brady Goss will provide live music from noon to 3 p.m. and Big Town Hero is returning to Keizer for a day to serve a buffet lunch. The cost is $7 per person and $5 for seniors. “I think some people shy away from the tent because they think of it as an adult party and we wanted to have space where seniors and stay-at-home moms could come in and enjoy the music and have a meal without feeling as though they are out of place,” Bethell said. Smaller shifts in the festival schedule include: • A teen talent contest (with cash prizes provided by UpTown Music) on Sunday, May 20, in the Big Tent. • The 3K, 5K and half-marathon runs will all take place on Saturday. The marathon has been discontinued. Bethell said the change in the runs to a single day is a direct result of participant desires to feed off the crowd gathered for the parade. • There will be more vendors throughout the weekend. Bethell said calls were still coming in to reserve spaces the fi rst week of May. • NW Natural Gas will host a tent for young entrepreneurs participating in Lemonade Day on Saturday, May 20. Today, the District stands strong with 35 career personnel, 20 volunteer re ghters, and 13 Explorer Scouts. When the District rst organized, their only re engine was a 1948 Ford 500 gallon pumper, equipped with the latest type high pressure pump, at a cost of less than $10,000.00. is re engine was housed under a lean-to shed at the Keizer Food Lockers. As the population of the re district grew and changed so did the types of calls re ghters responded to. In 1949, re ghters responded to 30 alarms- all for res. In 2017 our re ghters and paramedics responded to 5,419 emergencies of which only 100 were re related.Even the way re ghters are noti ed of emergencies has drastically changed in 70 years. Callouts to respond to a re were once facilitated by a siren that blew and a telephone tree operated by the Fire Belles, who were the spouses of the remen. Today when 911 is called, a team of professionals answer and dispatch the call from a central location in downtown Salem. Fire ghters are then noti ed by radio and messages to their cell phones. Fire ghters have been driving Santa on the re engine and delivering candy canes every December since 1963. e District still hosts a Mother’s Day Breakfast and Santa Breakfast each year, along with selling corn at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. While many things have changed, the love of the community is still strong within the Keizer Fire District.B R O UGHT T O YO U BY THE FO LL O WIN G S PO NSO RS70 YEARSO F S ER VI CEKEIZER FIRE D IS TRI CTKeizer Volunteer Firefighters Association, Keizer Professional Firefighters Local 3881, DavidDahle.com,R Bauer Insurance, Boucher Jewelers, Keizertimes, Schreiner’s Iris Gardens, Valic Financial ServicesJoin us for the Celebrationduring 2018 KEIZER FESTMONDAY, MAY 14Join us for a reception from 6 to 8 pm, featuring former volunteer and careerstaff as well as old and new equipment.SATURDAY, MAY 19We are extremely honored to be theGrand Marshall of this year’sParade, which will start at 10 am.PAGE 6, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO KEIZERFEST, MAY 2018The Valley Credit Service Iris Festival Parade hits the street Saturday, May 19. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at River Road North and Lockhaven Drive North, then rolls south two miles along River Road through Keizer before ending at Glynbrook Drive. This year, one Keizer business is building a float spectators can win. Remodeling by Classic Homes will be pulling a 9-by-8-foot playhouse/shed to advertise its services, but it will be auction-ing off the playhouse after the parade. Tick-ets are $5 each or 5 for $20 and will be sold at the KeizerFEST information booth near the entrance to the Lions Club property on Cherry Avenue Northeast. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Keizer Network of Women Giving Bas-ket program this winter. Other than that, the parade should have a familiar look and feel. Dignitaries will still be riding in Corvettes, grand marshal this year is the Keizer Fire District, which is cel-ebrating its 70th year. More than 100 entries will fill the two-hour parade including Mayor Cathy Clark, Keizer’s First Citizen Joe Egli, Merchant of the Year Larry Jackson, Service to Education Award winner Jason Flores and President’s Award recipient Matt Lawyer. Also in the parade will be winners of the title of Keizer’s Distinguished Young Wom-en, who will be chosen on May 12. The parade will feature equestrian groups, floats, classic cars and more. The Keizer Police Department will close River Road to traffic at 9 a.m. on parade day. Traffic will be rerouted on side streets between south Keizer and north Keizer. An estimated 25,000 people watch the parade each year. This year’s theme is The Keizer Way. Keizer Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Danielle Bethell said chamber employees have fielded many calls asking precisely what that means. “We’ve been telling them that it’s what-ever you think about when they think of Keizer,” Bethell said. “I’m hoping that means we have a lot of interpretations of people’s heartfelt thoughts on Keizer.”The day starts early for those in the pa-rade. The parade check-in and staging areas open at 7:30 a.m., with participants need-ing to be in place by 8:30 if they want to be judged. There are a number of divisions to be judged. For vehicles there are three cat-egories: antique (non-modified, built prior to 1955), classic (non-modified, 1955 or newer) and custom (modified). Bethell said extra care was taken this year to spread out the automotive entries. Over the years its become increasingly difficult to get bands to commit to the pa-rade because end-of-the-school-year activ-ities require more and more time. Bethell said only two have signed up this year, but all entrants are being encouraged to include music in their floats. For floats or groups there are seven awards to compete for: Mayor’s Trophy, Best Use of Theme, Iris Award, Spirit Award, Most Unique, Most Humorous and Com-mercial Division. There are also four animal categories: Best Mounted Group, Best Rodeo Court, Best Novelty Group and Best Rodeo Queen. There are several rules all parade partici-pants must abide by, with one of them being candy is not allowed to be thrown under any circumstance.Parade rolls down River RoadMAY 2018, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO KEIZERFEST, PAGE 7Kyle Juran, owner of Remodeling by Classic Homes, has been wanting to make an actual fl oat for the Iris Festival Parade for several years, this time around he’s go-ing all-out. Juran and his employees have built a 9-by-8-foot playhouse that will be raffl ed off after the pa-rade. “I’ve wanted to do it for a while, but I could never fi gure out what I would do with it after,” Juran said. That’s when he landed on the idea of the raffl e. After the parade, the playhouse, which could also be a shed (a large door is installed on the side if the eventual winner goes that route) will be on display in the main festival area. Tickets for the raffl e can be bought at the KeizerFEST information booth for $5 each or 5 for $20. “The proceeds are going to benefi t the Giving Basket program at the end of the year,” Juran said. “I thought it would be a nice way to create a link between the two major efforts of the Chamber.” Each year, the Keizer Network of Women, a subgroup of the Keizer Cham-ber of Commerce, adopts local families and supplies pres-ents and holiday meals for them. Remodeling by Classic homes will also install the playhouse/shed on the win-ner’s property. Ju-ran expected the value of the structure to be about $3,500 when it was completed. The playhouse will be on display un-til May 16 outside Remoeling by Classic Homes, 4195 River Road N.While the playhouse will be window-less during the parade, windows will be installed afterward. Plan ahead. There will only be one way to cross Keizer’s main thoroughfare prior to the start of the Valley Credit Services Iris Festival Parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20. The parade goes along River Road, starting at Lockhaven Drive North and end-ing at Glynbrook Street.“Chemawa Road is the only east-west crossover,” said Sgt. Trevor Wenning with the Keizer Police Department. “This will be in effect until the parade lead gets to about Starbucks (at Chemawa and River), then it will be shut down.”In addition, drivers should expect Dear-born Avenue Noertheast to be closed aside from those accessing their home. The city is replacing the Dearborn bridge near Claggett Creek park and construction will mean lo-cal access only. Lockhaven will close to all traffi c between River Road and McClure Street North at 6 a.m., while River Road will close from Plymouth Drive to Lockhaven at 9.“Prior to the parade, traffi c can cross pe-riodically at Chemawa Road,” Wenning said.KeizerFEST continues to make its home on Cherry Avenue, now there for the third year in a row after a number of moves in years prior.Cherry Avenue Northeast will be closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, through 9 p.m. Sunday, May 21, between Manbrin Avenue and Alder Drive. Manbrin will be closed on May 21 between River Road and the Elks northside driveway and on the west side from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to accommo-date running events. Many businesses will remain open despite the road closure.Throughout the weekend, drivers will not be able to turn from Manbrin onto Cherry in either direction. One change instituted three years ago to alleviate parade traffi c fl ow was having of-fi cers at intersections, directing traffi c in one direction to keep the fl ow moving. Whereas traffi c went in all directions in the past, the change called for motorists to turn in the direction of the Salem Parkway or I-5. Traf-fi c was diverted to Verda Lane. The change also meant traffi c on Plym-outh could only turn right onto Cherry with traffi c needing to go northbound be-ing diverted at Alder Drive.Part of the reason was to make it safer for offi cers, due to a couple of near misses in previous years.Traffi c rerouted to accomodate parade, festivalRetirement Livingnever looked so good!Willamette Lutheran Retirement CommunityCall to schedule your complimentary meal & tour TODAY!503-393-1491 • 7693 Wheatland Rd N, Keizer • www.WillametteLutheran.comCaring Sta • Delicious Meals • Beautiful Grounds • Privacy & SecurityJoin us for our COUNTRY FAIR on Friday, June 22 (2 – 4 pm)Discover the natural beauty ofWe’ll GetYou HomeYou HomePrincipal Broker, CRS, GRIPh: 971-208 - 5093www.AmyMcLeod.netAMY MCLEODMAY 2018, OFFICIAL GUIDE TO KEIZERFEST, PAGE 93555 River Rd N, Keizer(503) 304- 7555www.skylineforddirect.comOpen MON through FRI,7 am to 6 pmOpen SAT 8 am to 5 pm*Quick Lane®-installed retail purchases only.
