BOCATC.ORG FALL 2019 7The Journey is the Destination Apply Instructional Design to Your Program Although the destination for BOC Approved Providers (APs) is to develop effective, learner- centered, collaborative and conceptually driven continuing education (CE) programs for Athletic Trainers (ATs), the journey can be just as fruitful and rewarding when applying the structured instructional design model. The process of instructional design is one method that can assist APs in creating educational program content while encouraging systematic program development for effective and compliant CE. The “Standards for BOC Approved Providers” dictates “what” must be accomplished by a CE activity; your instructional design details “how” you will achieve these results. ADDIE stands for a systematic instructional design model consisting of five phases: (1) Analysis, (2) Design, (3) Development, (4) Implementation and (5) Evaluation. The ADDIE model is the foundation of instructional system design and is the process traditionally used by instructional designers and training developers. The five phases represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. Continuing professional development (CPD) is an essential method to help ATs maintain and further develop knowledge and expertise. 2. The ADDIE model provides an established and useful structure for creating effective CPD programs. 3. The ADDIE process ensures that ATs’ appropriate learning needs are met effectively. 4. The evaluation phase of the ADDIE process provides feedback that can lead to improvement in the CPD program’s future iterations. Use the infographic below to assist you in applying the ADDIE method when developing your next CE program. Make sure you understand the importance of matching target audience needs and learning objectives to educational content by selecting the most appropriate learning format. This could include large group didactic lectures, workshops/small group discussions, hands-on training, case-based scenarios, panel discussions and home study programs. As you develop your next CE program, rethink your journey or process for developing the program by applying instructional design and improve the quality of the program or ultimate destination for ATs.
